What makes an account competitive

The best account is not automatically the highest advertised APY. Check whether the rate applies to your full balance, requires recurring deposits, expires after a promotion, or comes with a monthly fee.

Federal deposit insurance matters more than a small yield difference. Confirm FDIC or NCUA coverage and keep balances within applicable limits.

When to use one

High-yield savings works well for emergency funds, near-term purchases, and cash that must remain accessible. Money with a fixed timeline may earn more in a CD; long-term money may belong in a diversified investment plan.
